Glossary: Substrate

This gave us a really hard time coming up with a word for what the picture is applied on to. You may not like the word, and we don't either but it's general meaning is to tell you whether the picture is on canvas, wood, board, paper or other less common materials. Over the years we have seen some extraordinary bases for pictures, among the most outstanding being a barn door, a marriage licence( a disgruntled husband or wife one assumes) and a £50 note!
