Glossary: Bloomsbury

The term "Bloomsbury" is used to describe a group of intellectuals and artists who lived in the Bloomsbury area of London. The principal artists of Bloomsbury were Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry and Duncan Grant although there were many others on the periphery. Personally, I think Bloomsbury's main artistic endeavour was to rid Britain of anything Victorian, a very worthy ideal in many people's opinion. They created their own brand of post-impressionism and experimented with abstraction as early as 1914. Indeed furniture and furnishings were also produced in the West London Omega Workshops. The group flourished until the end of the 1930's.
