Glossary: Where to hang a painting

The answer to this one is anywhere there is a space and you would be happy with. There is of course the most tried and trusted method. In the 19th C. all the artist's who exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer show wanted to be "hung on the line". This meant that the painting was positioned so that the view looked at the work straight ahead without moving the eyes up or down. These were always the coverted sites and resulted in better sales due to the optimum positioning of the pictures. You can hang pictures anywhere and there is no room or position that would not benefit from a fine painting.
