Glossary: Windmills
Windmills have always been an integral part of the landscape of the British Isles. There is something about them that is comforting and friendly, something non-mechanical in an age where everything moves rapidly and must be finished quickly. As a child I always wanted to live in a windmill, they looked so inviting, so very different to ones own regulation house. I never did manage to own one although I nearly bought a Martello Tower, but more on that at another time.
At www.room4art.com we are fortunate that the descendants of Edward Eaton Brannan (1886-1957) have asked us to sell some of their grandfather’s paintings. Edward Brannan was trained at the Grimsby school of Art and was a professional artist all his life. He was a recorder of the countryside in and around his native Lincolnshire painting in oil, watercolour and etching. His works are of considerable quality and constitute an important reference to the life in England during the inter war period. One of his favorite subjects was windmills as they were a commonplace feature of the landscape. They were often in a state of disrepair as they fell in to disuse as electrical pumps were installed. He recorded many fine examples including Wrawby Post Mill, the sole surviving example in Lincolnshire.
We are pleased to offer for sale a selection of Edward Brannan’s paintings of windmills and these can be viewed at www.room4art.com.
The vast majority of works sold at www.room4art.com have a known provenance, having often been purchased from the artist or their descendants. The condition of every painting is fully detailed and has been photographed in extremely high resolution, so with the aid of our zoom facility you can examine every work in minute detail and there for buy with confidence.
