Glossary: ImpastoImpasto refers to areas where the artist has laid the paint on thickly thereby adding texture to the painting. During certain artistic periods this was frowned on but the modern art movement accepted the need for the artist to manipulate the paint and so impasto on paintings is now the norm. It also adds shadow and contrast to pictures that might otherwise look flat and lifeless. |
