Welcome to Room4art.com™!

July 26th, 2007 by John at Room4art.com

We want to help you find and buy high-quality, distinctive, original paintings and drawings online at affordable prices.

You might want to give a picture as a gift, or hang it on a wall in your home or office. We will do so by illustrating from our own site, Room4art.com™

  • just how easy this can be
  • how to find the artwork you want
  • how to avoid the risks of a bad buy.

Why buy a poster, when original art can cost the same price? Why decorate your home with the same picture that hundreds of people have, when you could hang a unique painting that nobody else has?

Of course most of the art that you see when you are out looking (other than what is hanging in a museum, of course) is expensive. It has to be expensive because it is hanging in a gallery which costs a large amount of money to rent or own and run. So the challenge is to buy from a source that doesn’t have the overhead that requires it to charge high prices.

But it is not only about cost. The most important thing is that you like the art work, that you want to look at it very often. And here again, an art gallery is not easy to use:

  • A gallery owner will hang what they think will sell, not what you want to buy.
  • In a large gallery space, you might see 100 or even 200 pictures. But your requirement might be very specific, even if not unusual:- perhaps you are looking for something with a lot of green, that is over one metre wide, or you would rather like a picture of a canal or a lynx? You would need to look at a lot more than 200 pictures to find what you want.
  • It can be fun to wander around art galleries but it is pretty tiring standing looking at 100 paintings, comparing them and trying to imagine them to on your own wall, especially with an anxious gallery manager pushing you to buy. And it isn’t even a canal or a lynx that you’re being shown!

And then there is the question of quality. In a gallery, you will continually be reassured about the quality of the art on display. But you can’t help wondering if you quite agree, despite the gallery staff whispering in your ears (they would say that, wouldn’t they?). You may worry that when you get home your friends will mock you for your purchase — a worry accentuated by the price you are going to be asked to pay (“What, you paid £8000 for that!!”).
