Glossary: Condition (of the Picture)
Our grading system rates each picture from very good to fair to tell you the state of the work (we do not sell art in Poor condition or worse). Obviously, this is a subjective rating, which is easier for me after 30 years looking at art than it may be for a buyer. So here is my approach: Very good means in pristine condition, the picture will show no sign of fading or damage, although it may have signs of normal aging. Good means the picture has no damage but may have wear and tear greater than normal for its age, and will have signs of normal aging. Fair means the picture has some fading or damage greater than normal for its age but not so significant as to detract from the overall appearance of the painting. Be reassured that the quality of our photographs is such that the slightest mark is visible, never less and often more so than in real life. Where we have identified a significant blemish, fault, crease, missing paint or other damage, we have listed this.
