Glossary: Cross hatching

This is used in printing as a method of indicating light and shade. It is formed by drawing a series of lines tightly together at an angle of 90`. In the early part of the 20th Century it became popular to cross hatch in watercolours when using a very dry technique in painting. See the Great Barfield artists and in particular Eric Ravillious.
