Glossary: Drawing materials
Pencil, ink, chalks, charcoal or other similar mediums on paper or board tending toward a linear form and also with a tendency toward black-and-white. Pencil drawings are fast and tend not to fade as they sit on the surface of the substrate. They can become smudged if badly handled. Ink drawings are usually applied with a pen or brush, the former being often detailed and the latter more free and impressionistic. Chalks and charcoal are applied as with a pencil and sit on the surface of the substrate, have no noticeable fading but again can be easily damaged by touch.
