Glossary: Advertising art
Advertising Art was developed in the 19th century when it was predominantly a graphic medium in support of the written word. With the introduction of lithography the world of advertising was able to develop rapidly with artists being trained specifically as graphic artists. In the early 20th Century Advertising Art developed in line with the rise of billboards and posters. The golden age of Advertising Art was between the two world wars, when firms like Guinness produced advertising schemes that are still powerful today. Who, among those of a certain age, cannot forget the Toucan and the slogan "Guinness is good for you"? The railways were a major source of fabulous art work with holiday and historical destinations producing some of the most memorable images.
