Glossary: Anatomical painting
Anatomical art has been around since the Renaissance. In more recent times Stubbs painted a famous painting of a horse in all its anatomical detail, and medical artists recorded the progress of operations and the effects of diseases. Since the 19th century students at the main colleges of art were taught anatomical painting as it was considered, and rightly so, that if you did not understand the anatomy of a subject then you could not draw it. Sadly this practise has died out in schools.
