Glossary: Gum ArabicThis is a gum that is taken from the Accacia tree. It is used in solution form over the top of watercolour to give the impression of a varnish like appearance. It was very popular in the Victorian era when it was applied to watercolours in large quantities. Over the years gum arabic tends to craze due to drying and contraction and this is a typical feature of Victorian watercolours |
