Glossary: Lining
This is a restoration technique which is often referred to, incorrectly, as relining. Lining a painting is where the original oil on canvas is cut from its original stretcher and then by one of several means attached to a new canvas. The most popular method of lining is by wax and vacuum lining. This allows the old canvas to have a new strong support allowing it to be cleaned and damage restored. This is a job that should only be undertaken by a professional liner. I've seen many terrible results where so called Liners have attempted work beyond them. Please call us and we will put you in touch with a professional liner or arrange the job for you.
