Glossary: Mannerist paintings

A style, from the 16th century, that came about as a reaction to the harmony and proportion of the High Renaissance. It's principal features were elongated, contorted poses, crowded canvases, with harsh lighting and colouring. One of the leading exponents was El Greco.
