Glossary: Modern British
This term gained acceptance in the early 1980's when there was a revival of interest in paintings from the first half of the 20th century. It refers to a style of art that was a backlash against the high Victorian style of painting. It incorporated elements of impressionism and realism often with a narrative theme portraying modern life before and after the first World war. It has a vibrant feel to it with work of the 1920's and 30's showing a new order and class structure due to a more egalitarian approach to teaching. A very exciting period of hope and opportunity that was to be destroyed in 1939.
