Glossary: Post impressionismA term coined by British art critic Roger Fry to refer to a group of late nineteenth-century painters, including Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. They were dissatisfied with the perceived limitations of expressionism as it had begun to develop in Europe. It has since been used to refer to various reactions against impressionism, such as fauvism and expressionism. This movement led to the British art world embracing the style but in a more formal manner. |
