Born in London, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art at London University. He was Head of the Art Department at Preston Polytechnic College (now UCLAN - the University of Central Lancashire) in the 1970s. Several of his works are in private and permanent collections for example at the universities of Oxford, Birmingham, Lancaster, and Liverpool.

 

Personal Exhibitions included Gallery One, London (1959); Jordan Gallery, Canada (1960); J. Moores, Liverpool (1961); Grundy Gallery, Blackpool (1967); Lancaster University (1968); Birmingham University (1969); Vernon Gallery, Preston (1970-1974-1981); Duke's Playhouse, Lancaster (1976-1979); Quartier de l'Horloge, Paris (1984); CCIP, Palais des Fêtes, Périgueux (1985).

 

According to friends, his main interest other than lecturing seemed to be painting abstracts. He was married with 3 children and lived in Preston.

Divorced, John left Preston Polytechnic, retired and went to live and paint in France, first at Lombraud near Brantome, then at Perigueux. He was a member of the international FUSION group, which was founded in 1985 by the Flemish painters Marcel Rademakers and Rudy Meekers in Baupommier, Champniers-Reilhac (Dordogne, France). FUSION grouped artists in SW France including Victor Ryath (Netherlands, USA), Pierre Souchaud (France) and Jean-Pierre Moccetti (France). FUSION exhibited in France and Belgium (Périgueux, Exideuil, Terrasson, Bergerac, Antwerp, Kortrijk, Heusden, Strombeek-Bever (=Brussels), Ostende).

The work of these artists had its roots in nature, translated into an abstract style, where light took on a form in itself.

Bailey was influenced by “intensivisme” (the theory propounded by M. Rademakers, a member of the international group Lumen Numen). John adapted the bright, vibrant palette of Rademakers.

Look out for the publication in October 2012 of the book "Fusion, artistes peintres du Sud-Ouest" by Mark Meekers.
