South side of Abbey Green in Bath with St James tower behind shops and Georgian town houses on corner of Abbeygate Street
A splendid watercolour in pale washes that compliment the mellow limestone of the city of Bath. The washes were applied over a pen and ink base which adds structure to the architectural detail, and given that the work has been stored in a portfolio for 60 years, we are reasonably sure that these are the original colours painted. Noel Brannan recorded many features of the city in great detail. Here he ignores the famous tree in the centre of the square, reputedly used for hangings, preferring to concentrate on the south side of Abbey Green, full of commonplace and human interest.
This is a fine historic record of a beautiful place and many of the features shown may not exist anymore. We are indebted to Colin Johnston, Principal Archivist at Bath Record Office, for some of the above details -- any further information would be much appreciated.
