Terraced stone built houses with two children standing by a brick wall

A charming etching of the backs of tall stone built houses. The work was produced from an incised copper plate that has been inked and printed in a press. We would refer you to the Glossary for a detailed description of the process of etching. The work is full of richly observed detail accentuated by hatching and the use of tone to indicate shadows. The work is monogrammed in the plate and then signed in pencil below the plate mark.

Executed while the artist was resident in Northumberland.

About the artist

Born: 1888

Died: 1964

Brannan was a wonderful draughtsman who sketched his native Lincolnshire. He studied at the Lincoln School of art and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His work is in the Usher Gallery in Lincoln and many private collections. His two sons Noel, and Peter were both professional painters.
