Street scene with housing in a residential quarter of Dieppe France

This work has been executed using a fine brush and black Indian ink, thinned to accentuate changes in light and shade. Where a lighter touch is called for the artist has used a thinner solution of ink dragging an almost dry brush over the surface of the paper. The use of the road turning a corner away from the viewer guides us into the painting, making us want to know what happens where we cannot see! The result is a dramatic expressionist painting full of life and vibrancy.

About the artist

Born: 1924

Died: 2004

Noel Brannan was a pupil of the Lincoln College of art. He was fortunate that his father was a Professional artist and taught his son from an early age. After working for the Admiralty he became an art teacher, exhibiting widely , including the Royal academy. His work was included in the influential Book of the early 1950's "Artist's of fame and promise.
