Town scene with level crossing keepers house and raised barriers in Dieppe France

Lovely quality brush and wash painting of a level crossing and buildings in Dieppe. This work has been executed using a fine brush and black Indian ink, thinned to accentuate changes in light and shade. Where a lighter touch is called for the artist has used a thinner solution of ink dragging an almost dry brush over the surface of the paper. Note the use of dark colours in the background to draw the eye through the picture. The result is a dramatic expressionist painting which highlights the immediate post war mood in France

About the artist

Born: 1924

Died: 2004

Noel Brannan was a pupil of the Lincoln College of art. He was fortunate that his father was a Professional artist and taught his son from an early age. After working for the Admiralty he became an art teacher, exhibiting widely , including the Royal academy. His work was included in the influential Book of the early 1950's "Artist's of fame and promise.
