Durham cathedral and houses above the River Wear with people and vehicles on the bridge A fine etching of Durham cathedral with houses scattered around leading down to the river. This work was produced from a preparatory drawing that showed all the relevant detailing. It was then etched into a copper plate and printed. We would refer you to the Glossary for more details about etching. Note the extensive cross hatching on the towers and the bridge to indicate the dark areas. The work has full margins. Executed while the artist was resident in Northumberland.

| About the artist
Born: 1888
Died: 1964
Brannan was a wonderful draughtsman who sketched his native Lincolnshire. He studied at the Lincoln School of art and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His work is in the Usher Gallery in Lincoln and many private collections. His two sons Noel, and Peter were both professional painters.
