The tall Cotswold stone houses of the outskirts of Bath seen on the ridge over the railway line A view of Bath painted plein air by Noel Brannan. The picture is expressionist in style with a hint of repressed fauvism. This repression is not seen in his later works. His early paintings this being circa 1946) display a great depth of knowledge and exuberance that have not been confined by the discipline of an artistic education. It was a number of years before he went to Lincoln art school as a mature student. Painted in Bath when he was working for the Admiralty.

| About the artist
Born: 1924
Died: 2004
Noel Brannan was a pupil of the Lincoln College of art. He was fortunate that his father was a Professional artist and taught his son from an early age. After working for the Admiralty he became an art teacher, exhibiting widely , including the Royal academy. His work was included in the influential Book of the early 1950's "Artist's of fame and promise.
