ARP fire watching station during the second world war with the wardens bed and steel helmet
Splendid historical painting of an air raid protection warden's bed with his steel helmet hanging from a chair. This wash drawing was painted on the spot in the Air Raid Wardens billet. There is no under painting and he has simply drawn with an ink brush and added a diluted wash over the outline. If you use the zoom facility and study the notice on the wall under the heading of A. R. P. you will see it is signed E. E. Brannan. Was he the head warden? Good wartime paintings are uncommon and this fine example shows a human side to the conflict coupled with the necessities of war. This work has been stored in a portfolio for over 50 years and we are confident that the colours portrayed are those which the artist painted
