Grimsby docks looking towards a derelict boat with crane and church in the background Very fine watercolour of Grimsby docks. This painting was produced by laying a wash of watercolour over a drawn pencil base with a later application of ink lines to highlight the shapes and architectural forms. The very limited palette adds to the sombre mood of the picture with its run down feel and degeneration. Note the hawser running across the front of the painting. Many lesser artists could well have left this out as an interruption to the viewer. But Noel saw it as a focal point, drawing the observers eye through the painting and giving strength to the composition. This watercolour was stored in a portfolio for nearly 60 years and is as fresh now as the day it was painted showing no signs of fading or discolouration. A truly splendid image.
