The Halfpenny bridge across the Avon in Bath
This is a lovely painting of the Halfpenny bridge built in 1878 of iron and brick. The painting was executed with brush and wash using a black Indian ink. The highlights and shadowing are produced using a very dry brush dragged across the paper. The effect is very striking and gives an impression of scale. The building is a suspension bridge with two end towers similar in design to Brunel's bridge over the Avon gorge at Bristol. The original wooden bridge built in 1863, collapsed under the weight of people travelling to the Bath and west show in 1877, killing 8 people. The bridge derives it's name from the original toll.
Painted while the artist was resident in Bath
