Le Dancing au Bar Tabac

A table overturned and people on the floor but Aperitifs du jour are still available on dance night in a French Bar Tabac The painting displays a fauvist handling of subject matter without the intense colours associated with the style. Here he has dispensed with detail to give the impression of speed in a fast and furious painting showing all the latent power of the dance in the scene. Notice the classic late 1940's French fashions in skirts and tops. This, and the offered Vermouth, Pernod, Cognac & Martel, were far removed from the austerity that still pervaded in post war Britain This fabulous study of an interior of a French bar was executed immediately after the war when Noel went to France.
