Street scene in North Shields with numerous figures shopping in a narrow jumble ob buildings Fine etching with a high bur giving a very pleasing atmospheric appearance to a busy street scene. This picture was produced on the spot from a prepared copper plate that was etched and taken back to the studio for printing. We would refer you to the Glossary for a detailed description of the process of etching. The numerous people have been recorded as a fleeting impression making the scene even more vibrant and full of movement. The work is full of finely observed detail accentuated by hatching and the use of tone. A lovely etching of an historic scene. The work is signed in pencil in the margin Executed while the artist was resident in Northumberland.

| About the artist
Born: 1888
Died: 1964
Brannan was a wonderful draughtsman who sketched his native Lincolnshire. He studied at the Lincoln School of art and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His work is in the Usher Gallery in Lincoln and many private collections. His two sons Noel, and Peter were both professional painters.
