M. Ingoldby Grocer. Humber St. Grimsby
Noel Brannan
approx. exposed area of image inside frame
15in h x 21in w
watercolour on paper
£480 framed
Item number 1527
Couple with a pram outside M Ingoldby's fruit and confection shop at the corner of Humber Street Grimsby Really superb watercolour showing Noel Brannan's great skill as a social commentator, recording with humility and simplicity the everyday and commonplace events where he lived and worked. This painting was produced by laying a wash of watercolour over a drawn pencil base with a later application of ink lines to highlight the shapes and architectural forms. The paint has been used in a very controlled fashion so as to avoid excessive blending of colours at the margins thereby retaining the integrity of individual features such as the Georgian shop front. The brush work is quite dry with certain areas such as the sky showing a dragging of the paint. This has been complimented with touches of pencil to add heightening. This picture was stored in a portfolio for nearly 60 years and is as fresh now as the day it was painted showing no signs of fading or discolouration. Is that Mrs Ingoldby standing in the door way?
