3 seamen on deck of the ship
The three portraits of the sailors are from life in the Merchant Navy. The man sitting on the rail smoking is the dominant feature and as such he has been etched more boldly than the two in the foreground. He has a feeling of time hanging heavily as he waits for his next watch as the ship sails on. The painting could be titled "Boredom"
The painting shows 3 officers of the "Umona". Built in 1910 it displaced 3767 tons. It was owned by Bullard King & Co. Ltd. And worked on the Natal Shipping Line. The Umona was torpedoed and sunk southwest of Freetown on the 30th March 1941 at 1.23 AM by U124 captained by Ernst Schulz. Of a crew of 105, 100 were lost.
