View of the Hop Pole inn 7 Albion Buildings Upper Bristol Road Bath A fine study of the Hop Pole Inn, Bath. The painting uses broad brush strokes with muted colours on David Cox paper, which has a coarse texture with imperfections allowing the paper to be unpainted but still add detail. Ink has been added over of the washes to give form and structure to the buildings. If you study the picture using the zoom facility, you will be able to see how the artist has moved from light to dark and given that the work has been stored in a portfolio for 60 years, we are reasonably sure that these are the original colours painted. The pub still exists and looks very much the same as it did 60 years ago. Sadly, Ushers of Trowbridge were forced to close in 2000. Painted while the artist was resident in Bath
