Lucky Escape of William Watson secretly ceded by British government to Abdul Hamid saved from the Bosporus by John Lake

"Mr William Watson secretly ceded by the British government to Abdul Hamid. But, in the nick of time saved from the trap door to the Bosporus by the passionate intercession of John Lake." A very fine Lithograph. I have been unable to discover the historical event that this work refers to, presumably in the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II, 1876-1909. Information please.

Max Beerbohm applied his own incisive brand of humour and wit to often dour subjects. The pre Raphaelites were always one of his favourite targets. See the Tate Gallery collection online for more examples.

Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm was a painter and caricaturist, as well as a writer (eg Zuleika Dobson, 1911). Born in London he was educated at Oxford. A friend of Oscar Wilde, his legendary caricatures were in great demand in socialite London where he was known as "The incomparable Max".
